High-sensitivity C-reactive protein
CPT Code: 86141
Order Code: C121
Synonyms: hsCRP
Sample Type: Plasma or serum
Minimum Volume:
Plasma: 0.5 mL
Serum: 1.0 mL
Tube Type:
Plasma: EDTA lavender top tube
Serum: Tiger top tube
Collection:
Plasma:
- Draw sample and gently invert 8-10 times (DO NOT SHAKE!)
- Centrifuge sample immediately (≤1300 rcf) for 10 minutes
- Aliquot top layer from EDTA lavender top tube and place plasma into a transport tube and dispose of draw tube. Do not ship the draw tube to Cleveland HeartLab.
Serum:
- Draw sample and gently invert 5 times (DO NOT SHAKE!)
- Let the blood clot for 30 minutes
- Centrifuge sample at 1300 rcf for 30 minutes
Storage Instructions: Cleveland HeartLab recommends that the sample be stored at 4°C and shipped the same day as draw.
Plasma: Store refrigerated at 4°C for up to 6 days
Serum: Store refrigerated at 4°C and ship sample same day as draw
Causes for Rejection: Samples will be rejected if there is gross lipemia or the sample is improperly labeled
Use: The hsCRP test can more accurately detect lower concentrations of the CRP protein, which makes it more useful than the CRP test in predicting a healthy person's risk for cardiovascular disease.
Goal Value: <1.0 mg/L
Methodology: Latex Immunoturbidimetric Assay
Additional Information: Any recent illness, tissue injury, infection, or other general inflammation will raise the amount of CRP and give a falsely elevated estimate of cardiovascular risk.
