Learn About Inflammation
Recent evidence demonstrates that inflammation underlies the development of atherosclerosis and ultimately heart disease. There are two types of inflammation: acute and chronic. Acute inflammation is characterized by redness, pain and swelling at or around the site of injury similar to what occurs when you cut your finger. This type of inflammation is obvious and has visible signs of injury. What happens when inflammation is not obvious and provides no visible signs of injury? This is the case with chronic inflammation similar to that which occurs within the arteries of the heart during the progression of atherosclerosis and heart disease. Chronic inflammation within the arteries is a ‘silent killer’, but can be monitored and prevented.
