Intended Use: The direct bilirubin test may be useful for the diagnosis of liver disease. In addition, the test can be used to monitor progression of disease in individuals with established liver disease, to monitor efficacy of therapeutic interventions, and to monitor liver function in individuals with sickle cell disease.

Limitations: Ascorbic acid in 30 mg/dL causes artificially low total bilirubin results. Cyanokit (Hydroxocobalamin) may cause interference with results. In very rare cases gammopathy may cause unreliable results. Results from certain multiple myeloma patient samples may show a positive bias in recovery, but not all patients show the bias.
