Clinical Significance: A cholesterol test is used as a screening tool to determine risk of developing cardiovascular disease. While regular testing is recommended for all adults, more frequent testing is recommended for individuals with established cardiovascular disease or those with a family history of cardiovascular disease, as well as individuals at risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Cholesterol testing can also be used to monitor the efficacy of lifestyle changes or lipid-lowering therapy.

Limitations: In very rare cases gammopathy may cause unreliable results. Acetaminophen use can falsely decrease test results.
