- Collect and label sample according to standard protocols.
- Gently invert tube 5 times immediately after draw. DO NOT SHAKE.
- Let tube stand in a vertical position to allow blood to clot 30 minutes.

Clinical Significance: Primary infection by EBV causes infectious mononucleosis, usually a self-limiting disease in children and young adults. Infection with EBV can cause lymphoproliferative disorders including tumors. EBNA IgG typically appears during convalescence (3-4 months after clinical presentation) and remains detectable for life. VCA-IgM positivity in the absence of EBNA IgG suggests recent, active infection.
