Clinical Significance: A Lp(a) test can be used to assess cardiovascular disease risk and guide treatment of lipoprotein abnormalities in individuals with a family history of premature coronary heart disease, a genetic predisposition for hypercholesterolemia, established atherosclerosis and a normal routine lipid profile, hyperlipidemia refractory to treatment, or a history of recurrent arterial stenosis.

Limitations: Intake of alcohol, aspirin, niacin, and estrogen supplements have the potential of causing a misrepresentation of the true Lp(a) concentrations. This assay has not been tested for interference by statin therapy.
