Collection:

  1. Collect and label sample according to standard protocols.
  2. Gently invert tube 10 times immediately after draw. DO NOT SHAKE.
  3. Allow blood to clot 30 minutes.
  4. Centrifuge at 1300 rcf for 10 minutes.

Special instructions: Blood sample should be collected 12-18 hours after the last dose of lithium. Write the date and time of the last dose of lithium on the requisition.

Transport: Store serum at 2°C to 8°C after collection and ship the same day per packaging instructions provided with the Cleveland HeartLab, Inc. shipping box.

Use
: The lithium test is used to monitor therapeutic levels of lithium or when an individual exhibits symptoms of lithium toxicity.

Additional Information: Individuals with kidney disease may have increased lithium levels due to altered lithium excretion. Lithium levels can be elevated by anti-inflammatory drugs, including ibuprofen and naproxen, and diuretics. Lithium levels can also be increased from conditions that allow the loss of salt and water from the body.  Lithium levels can be decreased by other drugs, including theophylline and therapeutic levels of caffeine.
