CPT Code: Not applicable
Order Code:

  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel: C901
  • Basic Metabolic Panel: C902
  • Renal Function Panel: C904
  • Serum Creatinine: C108
  • BUN/Creatinine Ratio: 2968
  • Cystatin C with eGFR: 94588

ABN Requirement:  No
Synonyms: eGFR; eGFR non-African Descent; eGFR African Descent

Methodology: Calculation

Turn Around Time:  1 to 3 days

Reference Range:

eGFR Non-African American ≥60 mL/min/1.73m2
eGFR African American ≥60 mL/min/1.73m2

Clinical Significance:  The estimated glomerular filtration rate is used to detect early kidney damage and to monitor kidney status in individuals with conditions that may lead to kidney damage.

Additional Information: Cleveland HeartLab uses the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation to calculate eGFR. The CKD-EPI equation has proved superior for eGFR calculations between 60-120 mL/min/1.73 m2. In addition, the CKD-EPI equation is more in line with Cleveland HeartLab’s patient population as it was developed and validated in a multiethnic population ranging from 18 to 97 years of age, with and without kidney disease, diabetes, and solid organ transplants who had a wide-ranging actual GFR (2 to 198 mL/min/1.73 m2). The estimated glomerular filtration rate is calculated using a creatinine test.  This calculation is only useful when creatinine production, as well as kidney function, is stable. The calculated estimated glomerular filtration rate may not be useful in individuals with a large muscle mass or with a muscle wasting disease, those who are obese or malnourished or those who are vegetarian or consume little protein.
