Specimen: Serum from Red Top tube only
Volume:  0.5 mL
Minimum Volume:  0.2 mL
Container: Red Top (no gel barrier) tube

Collection:

  1. Collect and label sample according to standard protocols.
  2. Gently invert tube 10 times immediately after draw. DO NOT SHAKE.
  3. Allow blood to clot 30 minutes at room temperature.
  4. Centrifuge for 10 minutes.
  5. Aliquot serum into transport tube labeled as “Red Top Serum” and cap tightly. Discard original tube.

Special Instructions:  Refrigerate serum immediately and ship samples the same day as draw date. If not shipping the same date as draw date, freeze serum immediately and ship with dry ice.

Transport:  Store serum at 2°C to 8°C after collection and ship refrigerated the same day per packaging instructions included with the provided shipping box. If not shipping the same day, store serum frozen at -20°C and ship with dry ice.

Stability:

Ambient (15-25°C): Unacceptable
Refrigerated (2-8°C): 72 hours
Frozen (-20°C): 14 days
Deep Frozen (-70°C): 30 days

Causes for Rejection: Samples received at room temperature; serum from an SST tube; improper labeling; samples not stored properly; samples older than stability limits; gross hemolysis

Clinical Significance: A pregnenolone test can be used as an ancillary test for the diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and to confirm a diagnosis of 3-beta-hydroxy dehydrogenase deficiency.
